Coachella’s Golden Years Continue: 2011 One Of The Best Yet

Happenin’ Event, Music:
With knowledge that ‘all good things come to an end,’ more and more seek to discover the Coachella Music Festival

Coachella 2011 was a weekend of dreams, fantasies, and complete ecstasy. Attending for the first time in two long years, I had somehow forgotten the pure utopia that comes with the Coachella experience.

With an amazing weekend forecast - sunny skies, 100 degree weather - and one of the best line-ups we’ve ever seen, the only thing overwhelming about the situation was divising a plan in order to see everyone, even if it was for just five minutes. Life can be so hard, can’t it?!

The 2011 Coachella line-up included Empire of the Sun, Marina and the Diamonds, Sleigh Bells,  Ms. Lauryn Hill, The Chemical Brothers, Cut Copy, The Kills, Scissor Sistersand entertainment powerhouses Kanye West, Duran Duran, The Strokes, Kings of Leon and Arcade Fire

Here are some of our thoughts on a few we saw:

This girl is unbelievable!

We tend to be a little apprehensive when it comes to accepting main stream talents like Justin BieberNicki Minaj and Robyn. But, like Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj, Robyn proved her brilliant ability to entertain within seconds of being on Coachella’s Mojave Stage.

Bold costumes, adorable blonde bowl cut, and vibrant energy - she’s a spit fire! We’re head over heels in love with Ms. Robyn!

When you been all my life, girl?

Crystal Castles

As much as we LOVE Crystal Castles, their Coachella performance was rather disappointing. Music was on point but the vocals/sound was so not. Like a musician friend of ours said, “everything’s great but the singer.”

Who knows, maybe they missed soundcheck but vocals were OFF. Lead singer Alice Glass was shouting into her mic unmusically and it was rather hard to handle on the ears. You could barely hear her so when you did it just sounded like noise. The sound was OFF which was pretty disappointing.

Although we’ve never seen them perform aside from the Friday at this years Coachella, we’re hoping for a better performance next time.

None the less, Ethan and Alice, we love you!

Scissor Sisters:

I mean, who are these fools? That was my initial thought when they hit the stage, but not long into the Scissor Sisters set was I eating my words. They were funky, fresh and an adorable pair. I love the dynamic these two - Ana Matronic and Jake Sheers - bring to the stage.

My first thought of Ana Matronic - brilliant. I loved her. She’s like a deranged Lucy Ricardo meets West Hollywood drag queen. Of course, we mean that in the best way possible.

Both Ana and the studly Jake Sheers were 10’s. They brought an electric energy to the weekend and it was perfect. Love them!

The Kills:

They’re modern day rockstars.

Today’s music scene has been consumed with electric pop, R&B, and pop country (Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, etc.). The Kills are making rock look good again and we appreciate them for that.

Besides the fact that Kills lead-singer Jamie Hince is married to supermodel icon Kate Moss, the band has plenty going for them. They gave a killer performance this year and we’re looking forward to keeping up with them.

One of our favorite acts!

Yelle:

She’s ADORABLE! Yelle - such an amazing little ball of energy!

We loved her vibe, her rockin’ hair, and pretty much everything else. She was a plesant surprise behind the little voice.

She did her thang and killed it on stage!

Empire of the Sun

Australian electro music duo Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, aka Empire of the Sun, are so much more than we expected. Remembering that video killed the radio star and that nothing is ever what it seems, Empire of the Sun took the Outdoor Theatre stage with goddy headpieces, smoke machines, and martian-like dancers.

Luke Steele had an electric guitar solo that was completely epic. The boys of Empire of the Sun took the desert night and blessed us with the saving grace of free-spirited music.

Cheers to the golden years! There probably won’t be many left.... #AllGoodThingsComeToAnEnd
